Ellen delivers in Boston

Oscar selfie most shared around the world

And the Oscar goes to...WCVB! The 86th Academy Awards broadcast on the ABC affiliate drew 1.028 million total viewers in the Boston TV market where the show was the most watched program of the week between Feb. 24 and last Sunday. The broadcast performed slightly lower than last year's show, which had 1.038 million viewers.

This year's pre-shows also rocked the red carpet; those broadcasts ranked 2nd, 3rd and 6th of the week's top shows thanks to Ellen DeGeneres and company.  (If you remember back in 2010, WCVB was the first station to announce that Ellen's daytime show would replace Oprah's.)

Also of note,  AMC's "The Walking Dead" stood tall in the ratings coming in #8 with 305,000 viewers. It was the only cable show to crack Boston's top 30 in prime time.

Here's a look at the most recent ratings from Feb. 24  last Sunday.

  1. WCVB-ABC  Oscars 1,028 million total viewers.
  2. WCVB-ABC Oscars red carpet (8 to 830 p.m.) 748,000
  3. WCVB-ABC Oscars red carpet (730 to 8 p.m.) 483,000
  4. WBZ-CBS Big Bang Theory 451,000
  5. WBZ-NCIS 442,000
  6. WCVB-ABC Oscars red carpet (7-730 p.m.) 392,000
  7. WCVB-ABC Modern Family 315,000
  8. AMC Walking Dead 305,000

Boston hearts Winter Olympics

Bostonians may be totally over the blustery wintry weather this season but they can't seem to get enough of the Winter Olympics. Primetime coverage of the Sochi games is skating circles around all other programming in the Boston TV market giving NBC affiliate WHDH-Ch. 7 ratings gold.

Here's a look at the most recent ratings from Feb. 10 through last Sunday.

RIP Chet

RIP Chet Curtis, the mayor of Boston TV news for decades. I remember having lunch with him in Marina Bay in Quincy in the summer of 2011 for a story I wrote (maybe his last interview with the Globe) on how former big-time Boston anchors like him were being relegated to smaller roles and how times were changing in local TV news. Chet was a gentleman and relished in sharing stories about his glory days at WCVB. He also told me how much he loved coming down to Fort Lauderdale for respites from Boston. And he really enjoyed it when passersby recognized him and greeted him like an old friend. (This is the article from that lunch interview)  And here is today's obit from The Boston Globe.

Boston and Miami's top shows

Boston and Miami don't have much in common (except maybe for my novels and Casola's Pizzeria) but at least their TV viewers have similar tastes in shows.

Both markets pretty much had the same most watched programs for the week of Jan. 6 through last Sunday including The AFC matchups between the Broncos and Chargers and the Patriots and the Colts, the Golden Globes and "60 Minutes."

Also of note in Boston, WGBH-PBS "Downton Abbey" Sunday came in #13 with 255,000 total viewers; WBZ-CBS's "Blue Bloods" with Donnie Wahlberg popped in at #15 with 246,000 viewers and WHDH-NBC's Golden Globes red-carpet arrival show rolled in at #20 with 213,000.

Sunday was must-see TV day in Miami and Boston

The most watched shows in South Florida last week happened on Sunday.  Whether it was CBS football, NBC football, "60 Minutes", NBA games, "The Good Wife" or Univision's tribute to late Mexican American singer Jenni Rivera, people stayed home in front of the tube over the long Thanksgiving weekend. Here's a round up of the most popular shows from last week that I posted on the Sun Sentinel website.

In Boston, almost half of the top 10 most watched shows were also viewed on Sunday.  In fact, the top three shows mirrored those of the Miami market. WBZ-Ch.4's broadcast of the NFL game between the Cincinatti Benggals and San Diego Chargers led with 772,000 total viewers, followed by "60 Minutes" with 546,000 and CBS' football coverage. Other popular Sunday programs were CBS's "The Amazing Race" (#6 with 292,000 viewers), NBC Sunday Football (#7 with 285,00), "The Good Wife" (#17 with 226,000). ABC's "Once Upon A Time" (#18 with 220,000), Hallmark movie "Christmas in Conway'' on ABC (#24 with 183,000) and ABC's American Music Awards (#176,000.)

Here's the top list from the Boston market.

(Green) monster ratings for Red Sox games

No surprise but the World Series scored several homeruns in the Boston TV ratings games.
The finals, which aired on Fox affiliate WFXT-Ch. 25, drew 1.4 million viewers in Game One Oct. 23. In fact, the five most-watched programs that week belonged to the Red Sox. (That's almost like everyone in Boston proper, Cambridge, Brookline and Somerville had their TV sets tuned into the finals.) That's (Green) monster ratings!

Also of note, AMC's "Walking Dead" ranked #19 with 206,000 total viewers tying with a "Big Bang Theory" special and "How I Met Your Mother." And NCIS from CBS was the most watched scripted series after the Red Sox games.

Here's the list of most watched programs in Boston from Oct. 21-27, according to Nielsen.

What you watched (at least in South Florida)

So my weekly updates of what South Floridians watch every week on TV is now a part of my regular duties at work. (It was always a labor of love for this blog anyway.) So here's this week's round up. of the more popular programs in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale market.  (By the way, a colleague of mine created that label on the left. Cool, huh?)

Anchors away but not too far

Former WTVJ-NBC 6 anchor Tony Segreto in a  recent ad.

Several former South Florida TV anchors haven't gone off the air completely. They have found new roles appearing in local TV ads. Here is my story on the trend.

Better Living

Here's an interview I did with one of Boston's most famous news anchors, Liz Walker, who left the TV news business to produce programming that focuses on better health and living.
Walker was the first black anchor to helm an evening newscast in Boston 30 years ago.
Here is a previous profile I wrote for The Globe on Walker when she transitioned from TV anchor to ordained minister
